Before the game, we went to fortify ourselves with some nachos and beverages at my favourite local watering hole... THE DEAD FROG!!
There were 3,000 people including me there to watch the Vancouver Eagles, and I have never watched a soccer match before. They were so close but they ended up losing 4-nil. And for those who do not know what nil means that means nothing, zero.
One of the most interesting things around me was the other fans; cheering for the home team, and jeering at the visiting Halifax Wanderers. I was surprised that one gentleman in a wheelchair didn't get kicked out of the game for his taunts and insults at that other team. "No hair, no balls!" He'd cry out. I later learned that he attends every game.
As the sun came out of the sky looking like the television show "The Simpsons" opening sequence, it had turned into a beautiful evening. There was popcorn and a $5 grilled cheese allowing me to enjoy myself. I think I can become a serious soccer fan. Also, because my nephew Owen, is still chasing his dream to play for this team. And Owen, here's some advice from your little auntie Jill: any dream you want is within your reach you just have to work your ass off to achieve it. I'll always be in your cheering section.
Thank you Arne for the tickets, sometimes the best stories come from the strangest places.
